The Steam Train Returns

The Steam Train Returns

We are delighted that the steam train is making a very welcome return to the Borders Railway this Summer. Every Sunday in August, the Scottish Borders will welcome vintage train carriages, hauled by one of the LMS Black Five locomotives.

This year’s steam train tours from Fife to the Scottish Borders is being run by Britain’s longest established operator of scenic railway excursions – SRPS Rail Tours. The complete journey will cross the World Heritage designated Forth Bridge to Fife and travel around the Fife Circle, calling at Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy, then along the north shore of the Firth of Forth through Kinghorn, Burntisland and Aberdour. After stopping at Dalgety Bay, the journey continues south over the Bridge to Edinburgh then along the new Borders Railway to Galashiels and Tweedbank. Throughout the journey you will enjoy magnificent views across the Forth to Edinburgh and the Lothians and Scottish Borders.

The train arrives in Tweedbank at 12.45pm and departs at 3.10pm giving passengers two and a half hours to explore the Scottish Borders. The historic town of Melrose is a 15 minute walk from Tweedbank Station, or you can take a longer route along the River Tweed. We are also happy to arrange for a taxi to pick you up from the station and return you there in plenty of time for your departure. Of course we serve lunch at the Townhouse and Burts and if the weather is sunny you are very welcome to eat lunch in our garden and enjoy a glass of wine or a Pimm’s. To avoid disappointment, we would advise that you book in advance, especially if you would like us to arrange transport. Please call the Townhouse on 01896 822645 or Burts on 01896 822285.

Tickets start at £59 and more information can be found on the Scottish Railway Preservation Society website.
